A Unique Handcrafted Wood Gift

by Scott Beresford

My father was a carpenter all his life. Ours was a large family, but no one escaped the woodworking bug. All of my siblings enjoy wood work to this day. The traditions are strong.

Growing up, I was the one who constantly took things apart and put them back together again, often finding they worked better than before. I was also the neat one, organized and efficient, and in my professional life I’ve spent years in a machine shop environment, working in thousandths of an inch and with the high precision demanded of the best fabrications.

Today I have my own state of the art workshop, the envy of all my friends who tinker and of many professional manufacturers.

Turning the traditions of my father into a business started the day I went shopping for a guitar. I couldn’t find one with the qualities I wanted, not without spending a fortune. How hard could it be for a carpenter’s son to make his own? And so I built one. In fact, the guitars I created proved better than many of those commercially available. (But I also learned why the good ones were so expensive. The man hours and precision craftsmanship necessary proved daunting.)

But the experience was wonderful, and since then I have handcrafted numerous products and gifts of various degrees of difficulty.

The handcrafted fountains offered on the Creations of a Craftsman website follow in that history. When I went shopping for a fountain, many of those on the market seemed “junky” to me. Small water reservoirs meant constantly refilling the basin, or the pumps would burn out, or they simply did not have the jaw-dropping look which I wanted.

I set about to create our Corded and Cordless water fountains, as well as Centerpiece Fountains.  Our fountains are appropriate for interior design, able to grace both home and office, and even find outdoor use on decks, porches, and patios. Most of all, I did not want my idea to become a faceless, mass-produced item. Each fountain is handcrafted and assembled one at a time, making it a unique gift, a quality gift you can be proud to bestow on friends, family, or co-workers.

Our Centerpiece Fountains are available to rent for weddings, anniversaries, birthday parties, and other special events.

These are some of the first things I built when I was a very young boy. I owe the idea to one of the woodworkers in my neighborhood where I grew up.

Hand made hourglass
An Hourglass

A true hourglass! This was a gift for my mother and it still belongs to her. It is exactly 60 minutes long. I always loved the simple beauty of sand falling through an hourglass. The supporting structure is made from black walnut, a popular and gorgeous wood that grows everywhere in Pennsylvania.

Bent wood mahogany harp stand
Bent Wood Mahogany
Harp (Harmonica) Holder

A bent wood mahogany Harmonica (harp) holder is truly one-of-a-kind. I have never seen a harp holder that was not made of metal and an ergonomic nightmare. I designed this holder specifically to match my posture when I play. Mahogany is known for its strength to weight ratio. This is Honduran Mahogany and the neck support was hand bent using steam.

Hand made parlor guitar
Parlor Guitar

My favorite guitar! The project I am most proud of is my little parlor guitar. The wood, even down to the smallest binding around the edge was machined from a plank of wood. The neck is made from African Padauk and the top is solid spruce. It is the perfect instrument for kicking back and whiling away some stress free hours with a little classic guitar.

Custom Harmonica Carrying Case

Carrying Case

Custom harmonica carrying case. Do you think I keep my harmonicas organized? Yes I do. A custom case that I designed and produced was my solution to conveniently transporting several styles of harps in different keys. What you can’t see in the picture is that the entire interior lifts out and there is additional storage underneath. It is the perfect place for my bent wood harp rack. The black case is made of molded indestructible plastic.
